During the Depression, U.S. 54 was the highway to California for families hoping, often in vain, to find work. The photograph of this barren stretch in New Mexico is an example of Lange's documentary style, also evident in her moving pictures of impoverished Americans.

The Road West, 1938 Dorothea Lange (American, 1895–1965) Gelatin silver print; 17.3 x 24 cm (6 13/16 x 9 7/16 in.)

Purchase, The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation Gift and Harriette and Noel Levine Gift, 1990 (1990.1005)
